inge cornil

Inge Cornil is a Belgian artist whose practice explores the relationship between landscape, light and colour. Working between her Antwerp studio and the places she travels, she approaches painting and drawing through sustained observation and immersion. Journeys through Papua, Sumba, French Polynesia and Indonesia have shaped a body of work in which personal experience, memory and the natural world converge.

Her PACIFIC WORKS emerged from her encounters with French Polynesia, where she followed the traces of Paul Gauguin and investigated his understanding of le sauvage — “the wild.” Tropical vegetation, water and shifting light become ways of exploring the atmosphere and energy of a place. Monumental scale allows viewers to enter these landscapes physically and imaginatively.

With BARK WORKS, developed in Bali, Cornil extended this investigation into the materials themselves. Working with handmade bark cloth and natural pigments, including indigo and sappan wood, she allows sunlight, water and the absorbency of the fibres to participate in the work’s development. Collaborations with Tian Taru and Pagi Motley supported these experiments.

Throughout her practice, Cornil seeks to give form to the experience of being immersed in nature. Her works invite attentive looking and a slower awareness of colour, material and place.
