New Paintings by Willem Hoeffnagel and a Rare Opportunity to Commission a Work

new works available by Willem HOeffnagel

A new selection of original paintings by Dutch contemporary artist Willem Hoeffnagel has arrived at Vroom & Varossieau.

The works continue Hoeffnagel’s exploration of human behaviour through his instantly recognisable visual language: anonymous figures, quiet gestures and scenes that suggest a larger story without revealing everything.

Alongside the arrival of these new paintings, a rare opportunity has opened in the artist’s studio. At the time of publication, Willem has space to accept one or possibly two private commissions.

New works by Willem Hoeffnagel

The latest paintings move between intimate portraits and wider narrative scenes. Flowers, groups of figures, passing encounters and everyday environments become starting points for works that feel both familiar and strangely unresolved.

Hoeffnagel’s characters may appear direct and playful at first, but their anonymity creates psychological depth. Their large eyes suggest attention and emotion, while their simplified faces resist a fixed interpretation. We recognise the feeling of the scene without necessarily knowing who the figures are or exactly what has taken place.

This openness is essential to the work. Rather than presenting a complete narrative, each painting leaves space for the viewer to enter it.

The new selection demonstrates how much variation Hoeffnagel continues to find within this distinctive visual world. Changes in scale, colour, posture and proximity can shift a work from calm observation to tenderness, uncertainty or understated humour.

Who is Willem Hoeffnagel?

Willem Hoeffnagel was born in Arnhem, the Netherlands, in 1995.

After initially studying Entrepreneurship in Amsterdam, he chose to pursue his longstanding interest in drawing and painting at ArtEZ in Zwolle, where he studied illustration design. Four years of working intensively with images, techniques and ideas helped him develop as an artist, but painting remained the medium to which he felt most connected.

Hoeffnagel has since built an international practice around his distinctive figurative paintings. His anonymous characters first appeared more than a decade ago and have remained central to his work.

The figures can represent the artist, another person or no specific individual at all. By withholding a clearly defined identity, Hoeffnagel allows viewers to bring their own memories and interpretations to the painting.

The role of repetition, tranquillity and anonymity

Rare new works available by Willem Hoeffnagel

Repetition is an important part of Hoeffnagel’s practice. Similar figures, shapes and compositions return across different paintings, but never in quite the same way. A small alteration in colour, gesture or setting can create an entirely different emotional atmosphere.

There is also a sense of tranquillity in the work. Even when the situation is ambiguous, the figures often appear still and absorbed in their surroundings. This gives the paintings a calm presence while preserving an underlying tension.

Anonymity makes that balance possible. Because the figures do not have fixed identities, the viewer is free to imagine who they might be and what their story could mean.

In a recent interview with Willem Hoeffnagel, the artist discussed this openness, his fascination with repetition and the directness he finds in paint and pencil.

Can you commission a painting by Willem Hoeffnagel?

Willem Hoeffnagel currently has room in his studio for one or possibly two private commissions.

This availability is unusual. His ongoing studio and exhibition schedule means that opportunities to commission an original painting are limited.

A commission does not need to become a conventional portrait or a literal reproduction of a photograph. It can begin with a personal memory, relationship, setting or situation. Through conversation, Willem interprets that starting point in his own visual language.

The result is a painting with a personal point of departure that remains unmistakably part of Hoeffnagel’s artistic practice.

Commissioned works have also played a meaningful role in his development. An earlier collaboration with a private collector led to conversations and ideas that continued to influence his work long after the paintings were completed.
