Deconstructing old photographs of Bali taken during the Dutch colonial era, viewed from the perspective of present-day Bali. The original photograph, titled Rijstschuren op Bali (Rice Barns in Bali), was produced/published in 1936 (source: Leiden University Library). Today, many rice barns have changed function no longer serving as storage for harvested rice, but transformed into bedrooms within private villas. This shift has become a symbol of how rice fields have significantly diminished due to unsustainable tourism development and the rapid expansion of construction across the island.
