Vroom & Varossieau is pleased to present “What About” a remarkable exhibition featuring the latest works by Marike Andeweg.Rhythm is a fundamental concept in music, poetry, and various forms of artistic expression. It refers to the patterned arrangement of sounds, beats, or movements in a regular and organised manner. Through the use of recurring visual elements, Marike embraces movement, flow and harmony within her composition. It took two years for Rhythm to form. The sheets had been waiting patiently in Marike’s studio all this time before she started working on them. The material she uses is handmade cotton rag paper. It naturally exudes a sense of calmness and respect for craftsmanship. Each sheet is unique and asks for minimal addition. With a few simple tools and her manual folding, the paper slowly begins to compose its own rhythm through the merging of the elements. Light reveals the color shades and the story begins to unfold.

The body of works Lines celebrates the intricate dance of individual threads on a canvas. Each thread, delicately applied by hand, demands time and undivided attention, creating exclusive patterns and varying color densities. These threads follow their own distinct trajectories, weaving a story of their own. They draw closer, drift apart, run side by side, intersect, and intertwine, almost as if they have a life and narrative of their own. Beyond the canvas, these threads continue their journey, extending both upward and downward, suggesting that Lines transcends its physical boundaries. It becomes a metaphor for the broader interconnectedness and complexity of life, where individual paths converge, diverge, and entwine, creating a rich tapestry of existence.
